Fuel Type:
The John Deere 316, 318, and 420 lawn tractors are designed to operate on unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher. Using gasoline with a lower octane rating may lead to engine knocking and reduced performance. It is crucial to avoid using diesel or E85 fuels as they are not suitable for these models.
Fuel Additives:
John Deere recommends avoiding the use of fuel additives, as modern fuels already contain sufficient detergents and stabilizers. In some cases, certain additives may harm the engine or void the warranty. Stick to clean, high-quality, and properly stored gasoline for the best results.
Lubricating Oil:
For the engine, use high-quality 10W-30 or 10W-40 oil, which meets or exceeds API classifications of SJ or higher. In extremely hot climates, 20W-50 oil may be used to maintain proper lubrication. Change the engine oil and filter at regular intervals, following the maintenance schedule outlined in the operator’s manual.

Transmission and Hydraulic Oil:
The John Deere 316, 318, and 420 lawn tractors utilize separate reservoirs for the transmission and hydraulic systems. For the transmission system, use John Deere Hy-Gardâ„¢ transmission and hydraulic oil or an equivalent. Avoid using engine oil or other hydraulic fluids as they can cause damage to the system.
Oil Change Frequency:
Regularly inspect the oil levels in the engine, transmission, and hydraulic systems. Change the oils at the recommended intervals specified in the operator’s manual. Keep in mind that heavy usage or extreme operating conditions may require more frequent oil changes.
Oil Filter Replacement:
When changing the engine oil, always replace the oil filter with a genuine John Deere filter or an equivalent that meets OEM specifications. Using non-approved filters may lead to reduced filtration and damage to the engine.
Storage and Handling of Fuels and Lubricants:
Store fuels and lubricants in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and potential ignition sources. Keep containers tightly sealed to prevent contamination. Additionally, follow all local regulations and guidelines for fuel storage and handling.
